our next TESOL/TKT course which starts 9 November.  This is the last one for the year.
The TESOL/TKT course at Eurocentres Auckland is very popular and all the students who have done the TKT exam have passed with excellent grades
.

There are still places available for this course but you will have to be quick as places are limited. If you are not sure about your  level, please don't worry as we are more than happy to test you to see if you can study in this class.

I have attached a FAQ information sheet which will tell you the answers to some of the most popular questions that students have.

TESOL/Cambridge TKT FAQs

  1. Why should I study TESOL/TKT at Eurocentres Auckland?

·        Our course is designed so that in the morning you learn practical teaching skills and in the afternoons you get theoretical knowledge for the TKT exam.  The morning and afternoon lessons are linked so you will study the same subjects and therefore learn more quickly.

·        The amount of teaching practice increases through the course, so at the beginning you will teach less and you will have more guidance from the teacher.  This will gradually decrease as you become more confident, so by the end you can decide what you want to teach and how to do it.  If you want some extra teaching practice, you can also teach some volunteer students from the school in your last week!!

  1. Who is TESOL/TKT useful for?

·        Anyone who wants to get a Cambridge teaching qualification so they can teach when they go back to their country.

·        Anyone who is already an ESOL teacher but wants a refresher.

·        Anyone who wants a break from General English and do something more practical but still practise their English.

  1. What do I do in the TESOL part of the course (Core Programme)?

·        The TESOL part of the course is very practical so you will observe our experienced teachers, teach your classmates, give each other feedback and discuss teaching.

  1. What do I learn in the TKT part of the course (Specialised Super-Intensive)?

The TKT exam is divided into 3 modules; these are divided over the 6 weeks of the course.

·        In Weeks 1 & 2, you study Module 1 which focuses on a lot of new language for talking about grammar, pronunciation, teaching methods etc.

·        In Weeks 3 & 4, you do Module 2 so you focus on planning lessons and materials.

·        In Weeks 5 & 6, you follow Module 3 and you will learn about classroom language and management and also how to correct mistakes.

  1. What level do I need to be?

·        You need to be a Eurocentres Level 5 (CEF B1) to do the course.  If you are a student at Eurocentres Auckland you can ask your teacher or Katie if you are the right level.  If you are not already a Eurocentres Auckland student you can take a pre-test to find out your level.  We can e-mail or fax this to you or you can come into the school to take it.

  1. How long is the course?

·        The course is 6 weeks and runs 4 times a year. The start dates for 2009 are April 13th, June 22nd, August 31st and November 9th.

  1. How many lessons do I need to study?

·        If you are taking the TKT exam, you need to study Super-Intensive (30 lessons).

·        If you just want to do the TESOL part of the course, you can study for 20 lessons (Core Programme) or 25 lessons (Specialised Intensive) which means you can combine with General English, TOEIC or IELTS in the afternoon.

  1. How much is the course and how much is the TKT exam?

·        The prices for the course are in the 2009 pricelist – remember to check if you are going to do 20, 25 or 30 lessons.

·        The TKT exam is $280.

  1. Who will teach the course?

·        You will have 2 teachers who both have many years of teaching experience.  They have taught and been involved in developing the TESOL/TKT already.

  1. How do I know I am making progress on the course?

·        Your teachers will do a one-to-one tutorial with you every 2 weeks on the course, when can ask questions and receive feedback on your development through the course, both in teaching and your TKT knowledge.

·        You will also take mock TKT exams throughout the course and also a Progress Test for your English level.  You will have a general grammar and vocab test as all Eurocentres Auckland students but also a speaking and writing test about teaching English.

  1. What happens about taking the TKT exam?

·        You can enrol for the TKT exam at Eurocentres Auckland but you take the exam at a different place.  We will give you all the information you need about time and place when you register for the exam.  Usually it is the Saturday after the course finishes.  Each Module of the TKT exam has 80 questions and lasts 80 minutes.  So you will probably take Modules 1 & 2 in the morning and Module 3 in the afternoon.

  1. Can I take the exam if I have a disability or learning difficulty?

·        Yes, Cambridge ESOL has many ways for students with visual, hearing or speaking and learning difficulties to take the exam.  There is more information on their website:

http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/exams-info/special-circumstances/index.html

  1. Can I do the course if I have a disability or learning difficulty?

·        Yes, Eurocentres Auckland is an equal opportunity centre, and no student will be disadvantaged regarding course entry and successful completion because of a disability or learning difficulty.  Eurocentres Auckland will help any student who has a disability to successfully complete the course.  We will talk to you about your needs and what assistance you need during the course, and we will contact any local organisation who may be able to help, for instance:

o       the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind can provide us with materials in the format of Braille, Talking Books, Audio magazines, large print, tactile collage and electronic text.  Their website is:  www.rnzfb.org.nz

  1. What happens if I cannot complete the whole course?

·        If you get sick or have an accident and are not able to complete the course, you should bring us a medical certificate from your doctor.  Eurocentres will then allow you to complete the course the next time it is running.

  1. When do I get my results for the TKT exam?

·        Usually we receive the certificates about 5-6 weeks from the test date.  They are sent to Eurocentres Auckland and we will send them on to you.

  1. How is the TKT exam graded?

You cannot fail the TKT exam as it is graded using 4 bands – these are:

·        Band 1 – limited knowledge of TKT content areas

·        Band 2 – basic but systematic knowledge of TKT content areas

·        Band 3 – breadth and depth of knowledge of TKT content areas

·        Band 4 – extensive knowledge of TKT content areas

  1. Do I get a separate TESOL certificate?

·        Yes, you will receive a separate Eurocentres Auckland TESOL certificate which is based on your progress in teaching English.  You will receive this certificate as long as you attend at least 80% of the TESOL course.

·        You will also receive a Eurocentres certificate with your General English grades on – these are based on the progress test you take.

  1. What does the TESOL certificate say?

The TESOL certificate has 4 Band Levels (Band 1 - poor, Band 2 – satisfactory, Band 3 - good, Band 4 – excellent).

·        You will be graded on Lesson planning, Classroom management, Materials development, Knowledge of terminology and your Understanding of teaching.

·        Your grades are decided by your teachers and also by the Head Teacher who will come and watch your final teaching practice.

  1. Do I get a coursebook?

·        Yes, we will give you “The TKT Course” on your first day in class and this is yours to keep if you are enrolled as Super-Intensive and are taking the TKT exam.  Otherwise, you can use the book during the course and then return it to the school at the end of the 6 weeks.  If you would like to buy any of the books you use on the course, please ask at Reception for the prices and we can order them for you.
